Inclusion and Its Removal by Synthetic Slag: Thermodynamics and CFD Approach

The clean steel is building block for high performance steels for their high end applications mainly in viz.structural, automotive, defense and strategic sectors. The high quality clean steels essentially entails ameliorating the steelmaking practices. The non-metallic inclusions play an important role in the clean steel technology. They need to be necessarily minimized or modified to remove its detrimental effect on the cleanliness of steel by controlling their morphology, composition and size distribution to remove their detrimental effect on the cleanliness of steel. It is however imperative to develop a methodology for the removal of the inclusions. The paper discusses the results of a systematic study carried out on the various synthetic slags used to floating the inclusions out.It involved computational thermodynamics, determination of the reaction rate controlling steps of these compounds. Also,a fluid flow analysis of steel bath with these compounds and inclusions was carried out to increase the inclusion removal efficiency of the compounds.
