Influence of Sn on Inclusions Modification and Plasticity of Tin-Bearing Ferritic Stainless Steel

The effect of Sn on the inclusion modification, the mechanical property and the hot workability of tin-bearing ferritic stainless steel were investigated. The microstructure at the precipitation/matrix was carefully observed, and the relationship between the workability and the microstructure was established. An energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope at the precipitation/matrix layer of tin-bearing ferritic stainless steel revealed that Fe-Sn alloy phase formed at the precipitation interface and MnS-Sn composite inclusions formed in the matrix. There is a little Sn-segregation in grain boundary and around sulfide inclusions.Sn as relatively high as 0.4wt%has no adversely effect on the workability.Meanwhile 0.1-0.4wt%Sn improves the tensile strength and the plastic strain ratio, and Sn improves the plasticity with the increasing of the temperature.A mechanism of the improved workability of ferritic stainless steel by addition of Sn is discussed that lower defect in ultra-pure ferritic lattice and the well-distribution of tin in lattice overcomes the problem of hot brittleness happened in low-carbon steel by the segregation of tin.
