Characterization of Oxides and Sulphide Inclusions in Al-Ti Complex Deoxidized Steels

The behavior of the oxides and sulphide inclusions in Al-Ti complex deoxidized steels with different carbon contents and Al level were investigated to improve the cleanliness of steel and to make use of fine TiOx to refine the microstructure of steels.Adding 0.02%Ti to steel containing 0.30 to 0.42%carbon can form the complex spherical inclusions of MgO-Al2O3-TiOx-SiO2-MnS which are fine, dispersed when the aluminum content is low.The influence of the Ti/Al mass ratio in liquid steel on the morphology and size of MnS and its ratio of precipitated on the oxides surface were also observed. The complex inclusions of MgO-Al2O3-TiOx-SiO2-MnS are beneficial to the formation of acicular ferrite in the non-quenched and tempered steel. The effect of aluminum content on inclusion characteristics of Al-Ti complex deoxidized and Ca treated low carbon Ti-microalloyed steel was also investigated. The results show that the inclusions in two steels with different aluminum content are obviously spherical complex inclusions with a two-layer structure, consisting of an Al2O3-CaO-TiOx core surrounded by MnS.The fine, dispersed inclusions in low aluminum steel can reduce the harm of MnS and deform less during hot rolling.
