Inclusion Modification Due to Reduction of CaO & MgO by Al

As Al contents in advanced steels increase, the possibility exists that Al will reduce Ca and Mg from slag or refractory.Excessive Ca or Mg transfer would form solid inclusions that can cause nozzle clogging. This study focuses on identifying the effect of slag chemistry and time on CaO and MgO reduction.Fe-Al melts containing 2wt%Al alloys were reacted under three different slag conditions(no slag,no MgO in slag and MgO saturated slag)in dense MgO crucibles at 1600℃.Both Ca and Mg transfer were observed in all cases, forming pure MgO as a transient phase evolving to complex Mg-Ca-Al-O inclusions. The findings herein show that Mg and Ca transfer occur simultaneously and the results suggest the kinetics are determined by mass transfer control of both Ca and Mg in the metal.
