Thermodynamics of Nitrogen and AlN Formation in High-Al, High-Mn Alloyed Steels Containing Si and C

  The simultaneous effect of alloying elements on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in multi-component liquid iron melt containing Al,Mn,Si and C was determined over wide ranges of melt composition at 1873K.The specific effect of those alloying elements on nitrogen solubility and AlN formation in liquid iron was determined previously by the present authors using the metal-gas and metal-nitride-gas equilibration techniques.Thermodynamic parameters determined in the present study and the authors previous studies can be used to estimate the critical nitrogen content for the onset of AlN formation in Fe-Mn-Al-Si-C alloys.A commercial TWIP steel melt containing 130ppmN was cooled from 1823K to the solidification temperature in order to check the AlN inclusion formation in the melt as a function of temperature.
