Modeling Short-Range Ordering in Liquid Steel

Understanding strong chemical interactions among components in liquid steel is indispensable to analyse its solution property and to further predict chemical reactions between the liquid steel and other phase such as slag, inclusion, gas, etc. In particular, interactions between metallic elements and typical impurities(non-metallic elements)are considerably strong and exothermic. This is not well analyzed as long as random mixing between solutes are assumed. In this presentation,it is shown how those strong chemical interactions in liquid steel can be analyzed by taking into account Short-Range Ordering(SRO).The Modified Quasichemical Model in the pair approximation was used to treat the SRO.It is shown that meaningful improvement can be obtained by the approach used in the present study.Modelling results will be demonstrated with some examples: reaction between Fe/Mn and C,Al/Mn and O,and Fe/Mn and S.
