Thermodynamics of Sulfur and Carbon in Carbon Saturated Fe-V-Ni-Mo Alloy Melts

Liquid ferro-alloys containing V,Mo,and Ni can be produced by the carbothermic reduction of spent catalysts used in petrochemical industry.Sulfur can be picked up into the alloy melts from the sulfur bearing spent catalysts, and it is important to keep sulfur in the slag during smelting reduction process. Therefore, thermodynamics of sulfur in these alloy melts is very important for producing low sulfur ferro-alloys.Prediction of carbon content in these alloy melts is also important for refining these alloys. In the present study, using the slag/metal equilibration technique, the sulfur distribution ratio was measured between a CaO-Al2O3 slag with a known sulfide capacity and carbon saturated Fe-V-Mo-Ni alloy melts of various compositions at 1873K.The carbon solubility in these alloy melts was also measured. The experimental results were analyzed using thermodynamic models to determine the first-and the second-order interaction parameters of vanadium, molybdenum and nickel on carbon and sulfur in liquid alloys under carbon saturated condition.Experiments was also carried out to check the accuracy of predicted carbon and sulfur contents in Fe-V-Mo-Ni alloy melts using thermodynamic parameters determined in the present study.
