Removal of Rare Earth Elements from Scrap Using Iron-and Steelmaking Processes

The possibility of efficient recovery of rare earth metals along with other rare metals using conventional ironmaking(reduction)and steelmaking(oxidation)processes was examined thermodynamically and experimentally. It was clarified that rare earth elements can be easily transferred to liquid metal(molten pig iron)in a reduction stage, and to slag in an oxidation stage.Rare earth elements were concentrated in specific mineral phases during the cooling and solidification of the slag.It was found that the separation of the mineral phases containing higher contents of rare earth elements from other mineral phases was a key-point in order to obtain a higher quality ore substitute.
