Thermodynamic and Kinetic Modeling Tools and Their Application to the Life Cycle of Stainless Steel
Computational thermodynamics has evolved over the past four decades to become a powerful, flexible tool of study in a variety of scientific and technological areas of industrial importance. For example, rather early on it was successfully applied in alloy development for stainless steels, and has since then continuously developed toward use in more and more applications within the life cycle of stainless steel.Today, computational kinetics is also successfully applied within several areas of the life cycle of stainless steel,e.g.simulation of; metallurgical extraction, microsegregation during solidification, heat treatment, and evolution of microstructure during service in high temperature applications. This presentation aims to describe some recent advances in the application of computational thermodynamics and kinetics to complex situations within the life cycle of stainless steel, ranging from alloy design to scrap re-cycling.
