Influence of RE-Mg Alloy Addition on the Microstructure and Performance of Cold Work Die Steel

The influence of rare earth magnesium on the microstructure in Cr12Mo1V1 cold work die steel was investigated in present study, based on the production process of electric arc furnace–LF refining – VD vacuum treating molded casting. The rare earth magnesium alloy was fed into molten steel as cored wire at the end of the VD treating.Carbide morphology and high temperature mechanical properties of the steel was analysized and shows the grain size decreases, the carbides are refined and diffusion appears after the treatment of rare earth magnesium. And the results of high temperature tensile test shows that fracture elongation and reduction of necking area are all ameliorated with rare earth magnesium addition. So the high-temperature toughness of as-cast steel was obviously improved by the rare earth magnesium treatment.
