Understanding the Steelmaking and Casting Issues for Commercial High-Al AHSS Production

ArcelorMittal USA is striving for commercial production of high-Al AHSS grades to meet the need for stronger and lighter materials for the automotive industry.During the steelmaking, refining and casting processes, special phenomena have been discovered that cannot be easily explained based on current understanding of regular Al-killed steels that integrated carbon steel producers have been making for the past 50 years. This present work provides a summary of these special phenomena, including the beneficial ones such as very low nitrogen, very low oxygen, very low sulfur, low nozzle clogging etc.together with the adverse ones such as high Mg content, faster changing mold slag chemistry and reverse segregation of Al to all other elements.Attempts are made in the following pages to give some explanations for these observations. However,in order to make process and quality improvements in production, more research is needed. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention of academia and industry partners alike to overcome these challenges.
