Results of As Cast Interstitial Free(IF)Steels for Skin Panel Application

Surface quality requirements of IF steels used for skin or outer panel is quite stringent. Therefore, production of this steel grade calls for necessary and sufficiency checks with respect to equipment capability and process norms throughout the IF production chain. In cold rolled and batch annealed IF steels, slivers due to non-metallic inclusions is one of the main surface defects of steelmaking and casting origin.Step machining studies on as cast IF slabs show that most of the non-metallic inclusions, both in terms of number and size, are restricted to first 2-5mm of slab sub-surface.Therefore,to minimize slivers,IF slabs are machine scarfed 2-5mm from top and bottom surface. However, this practice adversely affects overall yield and also introduce new scarfing defect on the coil,if scarfing is not done properly.Analysis of slivers through metallography investigations reveals that the slivers are sitting more than 5mm inside the slab surface. So,machine scarfing may not address the NMI problem entirely which requires continuous improvement in steelmaking and casting practices.Of late, trial with as cast IF slabs were conducted to assess their performance in terms of slivers.Selection of as cast slabs was carefully done with many other checks and controls in the production chain. The trial result shows improvement with respect to yield without adversely affecting the surface quality. This paper delves into the details of trial result.
