Water Treatment Chemistry Impact on CSP Mill Product Quality and Production Rate
Uniform mold heat transfer is critical for optimum performance of high-speed thin slab casters.Variances in heat transfer rates across the coppers results in thermal gradients within the solidifying metal shell and lead to surface irregularities. This paper discusses thermal transport challenges faced as Compact Strip Production(CSP)Mills increase production rates and product quality requirements.Analysis of a CSP mills quality issues uncovered a causal link between mold water chemistry parameters and increased frequency of surface defects. An engineered solution was implemented, utilizing unique water treatment chemistry, mechanical modifications, and innovative automation. This solution reduced cold-face deposits thereby increasing product quality and production potential.
