Comparison of Process Routes for Stainless Steel Making Based on Nickel-Pig-Iron
About three to five percent of the entire steel produced worldwide is stainless steel, with outstanding corrosion and mechanical properties.Indispensable ingredients of stainless steel grades are chromium as well as nickel.Production of such steels is typically done via the Argon-Oxygen-Decarburization(AOD)converter,this converter process ensures high yield of those expensive alloying elements and lower operating costs compared to other processes. The major cost factor for stainless production is related to raw materials, which make approximately up to 85%of the total cost.In recent years new raw materials for production of such stainless steels came into the market, most important are Nickel-Pig-Iron with nickel content of about 10%and the increase use of low cost Charge Chrome(FeCr high in carbon and silicon e.g.7%carbon,3%silicon).Such materials are already successfully used for stainless steel production in large scale mainly in China. This paper will highlight a novel process route using a bottom blowing(K-OBM)converter for refining of the liquid Nickel-Pig-Iron produced in a rotary kiln electrical furnace and melting of the FeCr.Using such bottom blowing converter allows direct usage of the chemical energy from the carbon and silicon in the Ferrochrome for melting instead of using cost intensive electrical energy.Furthermore, excellent phosphorus and sulfur removal is achieved in such bottom blowing converter due to injection of lime via the bottom tuyeres.Final refining and alloying of the steel is done in an AOD converter, the second converter in this production line.Combining a bottom blowing converter with an AOD converter ensures high productivity, short cycle time, high flexibility and high yield. With the development of this production process Primetals Technologies has underlined its position as innovative market leader in field of stainless steelmaking.A comparison with different processes and advantages of the process will be presented.Furthermore, some highlights about the latest development of process, equipment and automation is shown.
