Vulnerability Assessment of Pressurized Pipeline by Surface Explosives
Purposely or accidentally detonating explosives near pressurized gas or liquid pipelines may have severe consequences on them, ranging from permanent deformation to gas or liquid loss or even violent rupture.Subsequence, fire and vapor cloud explosions due to release of flammable gases or liquids may occur. This will result in the forced shutdown of energy supply and extensive economic and ecological damage. This paper presents a method for analyzing the effects of surface explosive detonation on the pressurized pipeline.Based on the dynamic criterion of pipeline yielding, the safe burial depth of the pressurized pipeline dependent on explosive loading and pipeline properties were evaluated to establish explosive loading-safe burial depth curves.Laboratory and field tests have been done to verify this estimation for pipeline safety. In case of rupture of the pressurized pipeline, the consequences, including the thermal hazard from a jet fire and a vapor cloud fire/explosion,are also simulated by using ALOHA code.
