LONG-TERM CRACK MONITORING SYSTEM USING 3D RECONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE AND MODEL REGISTRATION

Traditional manual crack assessment methods for concrete structures are time consuming and highly depending on the inspectors skill and experience. With the development of Digital Image Processing (DIP) techniques, capturing cracks employing the digital images offers high potential for the automated crack assessment technique. However, most of the existed DIP-based crack assessment approaches focused on the detection of the cracks in local areas rather than assessing the crack of the whole structure, and long-term crack monitoring under the basis of the DIP crack assessment is rarely studied.Considering that the crack assessment of existed structures is processed during the buildings whole life cycle, the numbering, recording, and tracking of all the growing surface cracks can be a complicated task and hinder the development of automated crack monitoring system. In this paper, a long-term crack monitoring system is proposed, which combines the DIP-based crack assessment approach and the model registration algorithm, and stores the crack data into the building information model. In details, two main steps are involved in this paper: (i) detecting the cracks and projecting the crack distributions onto the 3D point cloud obtained from the 3D reconstruction of the building;(ii) matching the 3D point cloud and the existed 3D CAD model to locate the found cracks in the latter model using ICP model registration algorithms.Furthermore, the data of the assessed cracks can be linked to the structure member objects of the building information model for long-term monitoring. The field test verified the efficiency of the proposed approach. This paper offers an intuitive and effective new tool in the subject of long-term crack monitoring for existed structures.
