Floating Architecture as a Possibility of New Building Typology

This study aims to investigate the different features of floating architecture from the usual building on land, and to review the possibility as a new building typology.Comparing with the ordinary buildings on land, floating buildings on water have some advantageous features with environmental, economic and social aspects.Features of floating architecture can be summarized as durability to a rise in water level, relocation & long-term usage, and economic efficiency by high utilization rate through global transportation due to mobility;minimization of construction waste, easy & economical maintenance, and little disturbance of floating community atmosphere due to prefabrication & modular construction;hydrothermal energy usage in cooling & heating, introduction of solar & wind energy, and almost self-sufficient system due to various renewable energy application;peaceful & comfortable atmosphere, conservation of natural environment, and solid cooperation between residents due to social &psychological sense of community.By the way, disadvantageous features of floating architectures should be investigated in depth and countermeasures to overcome are to be suggested through further study.
