Investigating the performance of a solar house with Chinese traditional vernacular dwelling culture

  In order to seek sustained development, green building, especially solar house, has put into practice globally.The most important challenge of these house is to utilize solar energy while maintain the interior comfort.Some of these are experimental and its design proportionally is based on building performance simulation.The culture element of architecture is inevitably ignored sometimes.But some of solar houses in China has explored the counterpart in domestic traditional architecture and attempted to apply it in solar house design.In this study, the entry house Solark of the Solar Decathlon China 2013 competition is used as a case study to explore the relationship between culture and technology in solar house.Based on this, solar application in Solark has been introduced, and an energy analysis is made to investigate the performance of Solark.The results reflect the reinterpreting of design strategies in traditional vernacular dwelling is a valid way to increase energy efficiency and inherit traditional architecture culture in solar house.
