A Study on Effective Management Factors of Machi no Ibasho (Small Community Spaces)in Japan

Since the turn of the millennium, small-scale regional community spaces, which we refer to hereafter as machi no ibasho, have been on the rise across the nation. These machi no ibasho are community spaces where a variety of people can readily visit and freely interact with one another. They provide opportunities for individuals to forms connections with and within the region on various levels, and many times they become a catalyst for diverse citizens to become the actors in problem solution. The purpose of this paper is to figure out the management factors that the leaders of Machi no Ibasho made their place effective to improve visitors relationship and voluntary activities. In order to clarify the factors, I picked up four cases from among commonly-accepted best practices of Machi no Ibasho and conducted fieldwork investigations and interviews with leaders and participants.Four cases were as follows: Shiba-no-Ie in Tokyo, Uchi-no-Jikka in Niigata, Tsuyazaki Branch in Fukuoka and Lita Club in Toyama. The result of the comparative case study analysis shows that the management factors can be divided into equally important two stages: primary stage that determines the communication pattern between participants and secondary one that beholds conditions of participants such as changes in relationships, role-sharing arrangement or supports for their activities.
