A Study on Relations of Inside-outside Space and the Opening in Seven Works of Craig Ellwoods Residential Buildings

  This paper investigates the features of the architecture of Craig Ellwood, a leading architect of the American West Coast post-WWⅡ and the creator of Case Study Houses #16, #17, and #18.There are many residential buildings of Ellwood in the American West Coast.It is the climate that is warm through one year, and there features the space that attached great importance to a continuity and a view of the inside and outside space.We analyze the constitution of inside-outside space and of the opening,clarify a characteristic of the space constitution.We intend for 7 representative works of his residential buildings, analyzed three characteristics: 1)constitution of the outside space;2)constitution of the inside space;3)constitution of the opening.As a result of these analyses, we clarified the following things: In the 1950s, the constitution materials extend outside from the inside, and the opening is only one direction.The inside-outside space continues visually and areally.In the early 1960s, the opening is the outer wall entire surface.The inside-outside space continues visually in both directions.In the late 1960s, the constitution materials around site form private outside space.The inside-outside space continues visually and areally.
