This paper is to consider how the traditional houses should be dwelled today preserving the value of the historic regional culture.Over Hokuetsu-Ou region (the southwest part of Tohoku in Japan) there spread L-shaped traditional houses, that style especially called Chumon Zukuri. This paper focused on one private house, Yoshimuras house, the typical L-shaped traditional house in Tamaniwa (Kawanishi Town, West-Okitama, Yamagata Pref.Japan), and clarified the transformation of dwelling space of the house from around 1830 to present day.I investigated renovation history of the house by means of interview, and I traced the transformation of these plans in order, comparing these plans with their family tree and the regional history. As the case of Yoshimuras house, it became obvious that on the first step they added rooms. And on the second step, they rebuild the rooms owing to the change of modernized life style and the change of family formation, then the use of the extended space diverted to the private rooms. It is considered that the birth of the private rooms consequently led to the change of both side of family relations and how to dwell so as to share the time in the traditional house.
