The Autonomy of Architecture: Aldo Rossis Rational Architectural Theory
How should we understand the idea of architectural autonomy? What meaning does it hold, when confronted with the argument that architecture does have cultural aspects? The purpose of this paper is to explore these interrogations, by looking into Aldo Rossis rational theory of architecture. On one hand, while he proposed such a theory based on the notion of architectural autonomy, he was also well-known for his books which described an intimate connection between the architecture and the city. This paper points out that his rational theory, while certainly defensive of architectural autonomy in terms of its independence from individual and cultural elements, does not exclude these. This paper seeks to reformulate the issue of these apparently contradictory claims with an adequate and fresh approach.
