The Transformation and Modification on Cultural Element in Traditional Architecture to Homestay in Amphawa River-based Community, Thailand
Amphawa represents the cultural significance through a lively river-based community in Thailand originating since Ayutthaya Period (1351-1767).In the past, Amphawa was the center of a water-based market and agricultural community along the Mac Klong River.However, 40 years ago, local aspects of Amphawa have gradually transformed due to the development of road network and declining of waterway network system.The conservation and restoration campaign along the Amphawa Canal began in 2001.Many projects launched by the public and private sectors bring a large number of tourists.In connection with the campaign, people in the community revive traditional water-based tourism by stimulating the use of traditional buildings along the canal and modifying them into commercial and homestay.This paper focuses on the factors and evaluation of individuals modify their cultural elements and historical structures, the users and guests idea on modification of traditional houses to homestays.Transformation factors in user scales from the community and identification and satisfaction from guests according to sustainable tourism concepts are presented through the specific characteristics and the evaluation of the water-base community for surviving traditional celebrations, and the local way of life along the Amphawa Canal.
