Regional disparity that the polycentric spatial structure obstructs in Mega Region

A mega region can be said a region which has more than 10 million population.Tokyo and Osaka mega regions are categorized as mature mega regions that their speed of growth has already slowed down.To make a mega region sustainable, it is expected to reform the spatial structure into polycentric pattern. Therefore, to prospect the change of population distribution, this paper analyzes population and density of population from 2000 to 2010 using 500m mesh population data of the national census small area statistics.Based on the analysis mentioned above, in Tokyo and Osaka mega region in the mature period, population does not change in the whole mega region uniformly.Even if a tendency of population growth continues in some urbanized areas in inner mega region, population increasing areas may became smaller and population change may became less in outer mega region. In the outer mega region in the mature phase, it may be prospected to continue to be low dense in outer mega region. As a result, it may be difficult to reform the polycentric pattern as far as whole region included outer mega region in this current tendency.
