Stormwater Reduction Effects of Green Roof in Urban Area

As cities become more vulnerable to floods, need for an effective flood mitigation strategy is increasing. For this reason, LID (Low Impact Development) practices are gaining importance in urban planning fields to minimise flood damage.Particularly, green roofs have been renowned for having wide variety of benefits including carbon sequestration, improving biodiversity, and recently, enhancements in stormwater management. In this study, two analyses have been performed to investigate the stormwater runoff reduction effect and economic feasibility of a green roof.Firstly, green roof systems were applied to one of major flood prone area in Seoul to examine the stormwater reduction effect. The types of individual rooftops were considered to obtain more precise results.PCSWMM was used to simulate and analyse the stormwater runoff reduction effect with green roof adoption at the study area.Green roof demonstrated average of 20.14% of stormwater runoff reduction effect.Secondly, benefit-cost analysis was performed to evaluate the economic feasibility of green roof initiative projects. Both scenarios had B/C ratio greater than 1;suggesting that green roof is economically feasible.
