Operation improvement of a hybrid air-conditioning system using natural ventilation in an office building

Recently, A/C systems that combine natural ventilation with artificial cooling (hybrid A/C systems hereinafter) have been introduced in many buildings, as an energy saving technique to provide comfortable indoor environment. We have also conducted Initial-Commissioning for an office building with the hybrid A/C system in Japan. However, natural ventilation had not been carried out effectively for the first year after completion of this building because of the inappropriate settings of conditions for natural ventilation effectiveness. Therefore, we have changed operating condition of the hybrid A/C system for the second year in order to improve the natural ventilation rate and to reduce the A/C heat load. The following results were obtained: 1) The total time of natural ventilation was 770.3h for the first year and 825.6h for the second year. The total time increased about 50h by improving the operating condition.2) The total amount of natural ventilation was 99.0 × 105m3 for the first year, and 352.2 ×105m3 for the second year.3) Although we could not discuss the difference in energy saving performance of both years easily because of the difference in operation conditions, etc., of both years, the A/C heat load of second year was decreased relatively.
