Rusal Aughinish Alumina Ltd (RAAL) is locatedin Ireland and produces 1.99 Mt/year of metallurgical grade alumina using the high temperature Bayer process.Location advantages include:stable country, political support, bauxite residue disposal land availability and high performing human resources.Main disadvantages arethat raw materials are imported, relatively high energy costs and all production is exported.RAALutilises strategic planning to capitalise on its location advantages and to minimise the impact of the disadvantages.A five-year plan is the critical management tool within the Business System to set the overall strategic direction.The plan is kept up to date to provide focus on the key strategic issues in all areas of the business and to take account of a changing external environment.The plan informs the annual budget planning process and is aligned with corporate goals.The planning and review process involves all teams and a cross section of the workforce.It is a vital tool in ensuring the long term competitiveness and sustainability of the plant.Key strategic improvements include cash cost reduction;organisational development, technical capability, continuous improvement initiatives,energy optimisation;recognised strong environmental compliance with emphasis on bauxite residue disposal and increased bauxite processing flexibility to achieve owner supply security.
