Technology for the processing of low-quality iron bauxites from Kazakhstan deposits

On the Republic of Kazakhstan territory at the Kostanay region there are explored reserves of bauxite that allow organizing the construction of alumina refinery.Bauxites available are characterized by high content of iron oxide which did not allow involving them into the industrial processing by known technologies of alumina production before.Theoretical and laboratory investigations gave ground for the development of new technology for the production of alumina from low-quality iron bauxites by Bayer-hydro-chemistry, hydro-garnet version method. The new technology consists in three-stage processing of initial raw material of any quality. At the first stage the Bayer leaching is conducted;at the second stage the hydro-chemical leaching of red mud takes place in liquor with high caustic ratio. At the third stage the mixed aluminate liquor is processed by standard method, producing alumina and recycled liquid phase.Solid waste of bauxite processing that practically does not have any alkalis becomes commercial product. In comparison with known alumina production technologies this process increases the commercial alumina yield, reduces the caustic, energy resources and fuel consumption, decreases capital costs and carbon dioxide emissions to atmosphere. The technology applied allows involving any types of low-quality bauxites into the industrial processing, eliminating red mud dumps and achieving the complete utilization of ash.
