Strategies for Reducing Impurities in Coal Gas Fuel for Alumina Calcination
Purity is one of the most critical alumina quality parameters, and the various impurity species are often subject to stringent limits. The last step in the Bayer process, calcination, is seldom associated with alumina contamination, apart from the minor pick-up of silica and iron due to erosion of calciner internals. However, when operating a calciner on coal gasification derived gaseous fuel, the alumina purity may be compromised with consequences for the smelter performance and ultimately the metal premium. In this paper the impacts of alumina impurities on the smelting process and strategies for mitigating and reducing the impurities introduced with coal gas are addressed from a calciner perspective.
