Results from on-line monitoring of individual anode currents at trimet aluminium, hamburg, germany
Trimet is a German aluminium company with three smelters in Germany and one in France.Since January, 2012, Trimet has been involved in collaboration with Wireless Industrial Technologies, Inc.of Oakland, California (WIT), to measure individual anode currents of aluminium pots. The WIT system detects anode currents by measurement of the magnetic field produced by the current in each anode hanger of the pot. These measurements are transmitted along a single cable on each side of the pot to a master circuit at the end of the pot. From there they are transmitted wirelessly to a receiving computer which processes the data and relays the information to the Cloud for further processing and display anywhere in the world. Results for presentation are that the magnetic field measurements give early warnings of anode effects, show spiking anodes, display the pick-up of current by cold anodes, reveal pot instability due to poorly placed anodes and give information on other pot phenomena.Using a mathematical model, the magnetic fields can be converted into currents.Trimet has made anode current measurements using the traditional mV approach and there is good agreement between those currents and the results from WIT.
