The Application of X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry in Aluminium Smelting
The application of wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF) in the aluminum industry is reviewed.From bauxite mining to alumina refining to aluminum smelting, WDXRF can be applied in most processes of aluminum production, including bauxite, alumina, aluminum hydroxide, limestone, lime, electrolyte, fluoride (cryolite, aluminum fluoride, fluorspar), carbon materials (anode, coke, pitch), silicon metal, aluminum and aluminum alloy.The measurement methods of all these materials are described.Some new developments are introduced.A new measurement method and formula of electrolyte analysis is applied to overcome the defect of traditional WDXRF method.Geo-Quant M, a commercial solution package can measure bauxite, limestone, lime and red mud with only one calibration curve.From 2006 to 2014, 10 norms about the application of WDXRF in aluminum industry are released in China, and many certified reference materials are developed, the application of WDXRF in aluminum industry is getting more and more important and popular.
