Review of Electrical safety in potrooms
A potline is composed of many electrolysis pots in series. In the last 60 years, potline amperage has increased from 100 to 600 kA and potline voltage from 600 to 2000 V and with this, electrical hazards have also increased. The potroom working environment is characterized by areas of different electrical potentials, which must be kept separated in order to prevent bridging between them with equipment or with parts of human body.Separation of electrical potentials, which is the basis of safe work in potrooms, is provided by distance, potroom building insulation, equipment insulation, personal protective equipment and personnel training. One or several of these protections can fail, but workers safety must not be compromised at any time.In this paper, the principles of electrical safety in potrooms are reviewed, electrical safety hazards are discussed and electrical safety measurements and measurement equipment are presented. It is shown that potroom work can be done safely in spite of high amperage and voltage in the potlines.
