Future Trends for Anode Bake Furnace Firing System

  Anode baking is the most expensive step in the carbon anode manufacture.The anodes basic quality is determined by raw material and green anode production, whereas the final quality depends on the baking process.Nowadays complex functionalities and extensive measurements are applied to improve the bake furnace process control.But often problems remain after the limits of the technological possibilities are exhausted.As a consequence the control system is used to combat symptoms when trying to overcome the physical constraints of materials and equipment.The problem is compounded by the fact that new designs are often based on copy & paste.New approaches have to be found to cope with persistent cost pressure in the aluminum industry as well as deteriorating availability of suitable raw materials.As the financial consequences of substandard anode quality can outweigh the variability of all other costs in aluminum production, the anode quality must be maintained or improved by all means.Simplified process control equipment, together with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations, lets us improve the average anode quality and reduce its variability.We can also reduce operating cost through plant-wide data evaluation at runtime, combined with meaningful instructions at the point of need.As a consequence the overall cost of producing aluminum can be significantly reduced.
