MEASURING AND MODELLING OF WATER PENETRATION INTO UNSATURATED CONCRETE

Concrete is the most widely used composite construction materials and its durability has become a crucial issue from the economic and ecological point of view nowadays. One of the major factors affecting the durability and thereby the integrity of reinforced concrete structures is the penetration of water and chemical compounds dissolved in water into the porous material as it is at the origin of various damage mechanisms. In this contribution, neutron radiography has been utilized to study the process of water penetration into concrete. The time-dependent process will be observed directly in a visual way and be studied quantitatively. On the other hand, Theoretical models of water penetration into non-saturated cement-based materials have been described.Finite element approach will be used to simulate the penetration of water. The results from numerical simulation and neutron radiography technique will be presented and discussed.
