Knowledge Sharing in Competitive Innovation Groups Agent-based Simulations and Evidences from University Research Teams
We model the knowledge sharing dilemma in competitive innovation groups.Sharing knowledge can enhance the chance of innovation success. However, competition among members erodes their incentive to cooperate.By agent-based simulations, we find a U-shaped relationship between group innovation capability and knowledge sharing level.Sharing level is high when innovation capability is low, decreases as capability rises, and increases again as capability continues rising. This result is consistent with the empirical evidences from the research teams of Chinese universities, where the co-authorship among graduate students in the same team (an indicator for knowledge sharing level) firstly decreases and then increases as the publication number (an indicator for innovation capability) goes up.This knowledge sharing inadequacy of middle-capability is attributed to the uncertainty of successful innovation and intragroup competition.
