A Study on the Trajectory Optimization of a Tiltrotor with the Tilting Rate Limit

This study investigates the optimal solution of the trajectory in which a tiltrotor turns in 3D space at the minimum time by numerical analysis.A tiltrotor is the aircraft which has both the vertical-take-off-and-landing(VTOL)ability of a helicopter and the flight speed of a fixed-wing aircraft. It has been developed since 1950s and will be expected to serve such as rescue and search for a disaster, commercial passenger carrier and so on.The minimum time problem is formulated as a parametric optimization problem. On the computer simulation, the tiltrotor is considered as a point mass.In this study, the limitaition of the rotor tilting rate is introduced to the simulation modeling as it is relatively slow.Several numerical solutions have been obtained under different situation and the results show that the difference of the minimum turning time between tiltrotors which can tilt rotors or not is considerable when the initial velocity is low and the several common characteristic of the optimal trajectories and controls exist.
