Azimuthal Instabilities in Annular Chambers with Flow and Axial Distributed heat Source

Instabilities of azimuthal modes appearing in annular combustion chambers of modern gas turbines are studied. The two methods based on mode-matching and linear Euler equation techniques are introduced.Different from traditional method to deal with azimuthal instabilities, the present work shows that boundary conditions of entropy and vorticity waves should be given besides impedance boundary conditions for acoustic waves when there is a flow.A good agreement is found between the results of the two methods.Emphasis is placed on the effect of the flow and the distributed heat source on the instabilities. It is found that the vorticity waves, which are often neglected in the analytical models of instabilities, play an important role in azimuthal instabilities in combustion chambers with a mean flow.
