Numerical Study on Vortex Alleviation of Chipped Wings

As the demand for air traffic is increasing all over the world, capacity of an airport approaches its limits.Landing and taking off separation time intervals are directly affected by the strength of the vortex emanating from the wing tips.In this paper,a new concept of a wing is designed to reduce the strength of the vortex for operational efficiency of airport. To attenuate the intensity of vortex wake to acceptable level, the wing with a rectangular hole is newly introduced, which is named as chipped wing and its aerodynamic characteristics are analyzed in a systematic manner. From the computational results,it was confirmed that the vortex magnitude is reduced by up to 54.7%in the A1.3 AR3 S0.15 Case.Comparison of the vortex generated in the baseline and chipped wing indicates that the effect of chipped wing on reducing the vortex magnitude is caused by the vortex leak through chip.In addition, introducing the wing with the addition flat plate on chip,it is confirmed that the drag penalty is 0.93%.Therefore,the chipped wing could be a viable option to minimize the vortex intensity while minimizing the aerodynamic coefficient loss.
