Characterization of gas flow in the active goaf of a longwall panel
A detailed understanding of gas flow dynamics in longwall goafs is of fundamental importance for optimal gas drainage design in mining gassy coal seams.A longwall goal in Pansan mine was characterized of its gas flow dynamics with a tracer gas test and computational fluid dynamics modeling technique. The tracer gas test was used to understand goaf gas migration and computational fluid dynamics modeling was carried out to simulate goaf gas flow such as the distribution of gas pressure, gas velocity and gas concentration. These studies provided an invaluable insight into gas flow dynamics in the goaf and the results of the studies were then used in development of effective goaf gas drainage systems in Pansan mine. This paper describes the tracer gas test and computational fluid dynamics modeling and presents the results of these studies.
