Mesoscopic crack propagation pattern of rock uniaxial compression based on image segmentation

To study the mesoscopic crack propagation pattern of rock uniaxial compression failure, numerical simulations were carried out on the basis of the rock uniaxial compression tests on rock mechanics test system and the crack observation by scanning electron microscope. And to extract the local mesoscopic crack propagation characteristics of numerical simulations, an image segmentation technology was used to extract the crack information. The mesoscopic crack information showed that whether the rock had defects or not, the crack spacing phenomenon appeared during uniaxial compression. For intact rock, the rock failure experienced five steps, from micro-crack initiation and propagation at random, 1 or s shape crack spacing initiation and propagation, crack clusters coalescence, macroscopic crack initiation and rock failure. For parallel precrack rock, wing crack was the most typical propagation pattern of uniaxial compression failure, with bifurcation crack sometimes appearing, but when the precrack angle was bigger than 70°, the crack spacing initiated, propagated and coalesced in its own direction till failure, without wing crack any more.
