An Epidemiological Survey of the Cystic Echinococcosis in Yak in China
The objectives of this epidemiological study on cystic echinococcosis (CE) in China (2012-2013) was to update the prevalence of CE in yak living in Tibetan Plateau and to collect protoscoleces and germinal layers for genetic research purposes. The post mortem inspection including 3 782 yaks. The global CE infection prevalence rates obtained were 18.42%.The infection rates were especially high in the Qilian county (37.79%).The majority of infected yak had hydatid cysts in both liver and lungs. Results showed that Echinococcus granulosus is in an endemic steady state with no evidence of protective immunity in the intermediate hosts. The geographical distribution of CE is much wider than originally thought. In conclusion, these findings of CE in slaughtered yak prompt plans for further epidemiological studies and control programmes.
