Effects of nitrogen on winter wheat regrowth and grain yield after defoliation at tillering
In dual-purpose winter wheat production systems, fall growth is grazed after freeze-up in Gansu, China. This greenhouse experiment investigated the response of winter wheat c.v.Longyu2 to five rates of N (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 g N / kg soil) after a simulated grazing event of clipping at the 5 tiller stage of growth. Our results indicate that additional N is required to achieve adequate regrowth after clipping, especially from the elongation stage until maturity.Grain yield and spikes plant-1 for the 0.1 and 0.2 g N kg-1 soil rate were in the highest groupings.Clipping without the addition of N under greenhouse conditions will result in a significant yield loss (up to an 80%) in grazing-purpose winter wheat.
