Rangeland degradation and insecure tenure in Mongolia
The root causes of the pasture degradation are open access and the collapse of herders organizations after the transition to the market economy in 1990.Open access to common pastureland serves as one of the main reasons for overgrazing. The state owned pastureland is used by herders freely leading to degradation and desertification of pastureland. There is no mechanism in place to limit or stop degradation of pastureland.Herders prefer to increase the number of their livestock as a main source of income generation. It leads to deterioration of natural resources. So, there is an urgent need to select or choose better forms of property fights (state owned, private and owned by community), develop an appropriate pasture management and set herders self-governing institutions.
