Distributed Measurement of Intense Magnetic Fields by Means of Optical Fibers
A novel class of distributed fiber optic sensors for the measurement of intense magnetic fields has been recently introduced. The sensors are based on Faraday rotation of polarization and on the distributed polarization measurement of the Rayleigh backscattered light. This paper reviews the current results showing how the technique can be used to map both intensity and direction of strong magnetic field in the area spanned by the optical fiber, with spatial resolution in the order of centimeters.
