Interface modification of Kevlar fiber/epoxy resin by cryogenic treatment
In this study, Kevlar fiber compared with Kevlar fiber/epoxy micro-composite were selected to undertake interface modification through two different methods known as the temperature program controlled method (TPCM) and quenching method (QM).The interracial shear strength (IFSS) of the modified Kevlar with epoxy resin was characterized by means of the micro-bond test and the result showed an increase of 12.7% (TPCM) and 5.5% (QM) respectively. The surface morphology of the cryo-treated and untreated fibers was observed by atomic force microscope (AFM).It showed obvious improvement of surface roughness after cryogenic treatment which in agreement with the result of IFSS.However, the IFSS values of micro-composites significantly increased by 35.2% (TPCM) and 19.9% (QM) showing great potency of cryogenic treatment on interface modification of Kevlar fiber and epoxy resin system.
