Attention Pattern for a Hybrid BCI System Based on P300 and SSVEP

To develop a parallel hybrid brain-computer interface(BCI)based on P300 and Steady State Visual Evoked Potential(SSVEP),we first design a hybrid interface including P300 and SSVEP stimuli,to which subjects can simultaneously attend. We then explore whether SSVEP and P300 potentials can be simultaneously evoked in the hybrid stimuli by examining two attention patterns: the P300-More pattern and the SSVEP-More pattern. The P300-More pattern means that subjects pay more attention to P300 stimuli than SSVEP stimuli, whereas the SSVEP-More pattern means that more attention is paid to SSVEP stimuli than P300 stimuli.Furthermore,we compare the amplitude and latency of P300 component and the Signal-Noise-Rate(SNR)of SSVEP between the two attention patterns. The experimental results show that each of the two attention patterns can simultaneously evoke P300 and SSVEP,and the P300-More pattern performs better and thus may be more suitable for developing a parallel hybrid BCI based on P300 and SSVEP.
