SELF-COMPACTING GLASS MORTAR: THEIR VALUE-ADDED PROPERTIES AND POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
Recent developments in self-compacting concrete (SCC) show significant promises in addressing many challenges faced by the construction industry.A number of research studies have demonstrated that using recycled materials as constituents can improve and add values to the performance of traditional self-compacting concrete (or mortar).Noticeable improvements in concrete workability, dry shrinkage, resistance to water penetration and chemical attack can be achieved with the use of recycled glass aggregates in SCC.The presence of glass aggregates in self-compacting glass mortar (SCGM) can also improve the photocatalytic activities (such as antibacterial, self-cleaning and air-purifying properties) when the SCC is coated with a surface layer of nano-titanium oxide (TiO2).It is likely that light could be carried to a greater depth (through the transmission properties of glass) to activate the TiO2 within the inner part of the surface layer. Our recent works also demonstrated that when exposed to elevated temperatures, increasing recycled glass contents in the SCGM proportionally increased their residual compressive strength and elastic modulus. These value-added SCGM products are close to being commercialized for use in floor tiles, building facade elements and table top counters for architectural applications.
