RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES AND EARLY HYDRATION OF BLENDED CEMENT PASTES WITH A PCE SUPERPLASTICIZER
The performance of a methacrylate methoxy-poly(ethylene oxide) polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) was investigated and compared in two contrasting sets of blended cements;fly ash (FA) and calcined marl (CM).In the FA blended cements, this PCE displayed dosage dependent performance and mainly affected the hydration of cement particles.This way, the improved flow of the cement pastes can be attributed to the increase in PCE to cement ratio, reflected in the lower resistance to flow of the FA blended cement in relation to the neat OPC cement.On the other hand, CM had a high affinity for water and consumed PCE even at a low replacement amount of 20%, leading to an worsened rheological properties.It was found that, while a recommended dosage of less than 0.2 %bwob of PCE was required for fluidizing the FA cement, more than 0.2%bwob was required to get an acceptable flow even when only 20% calcined marl was present in the cement.The methods employed include rheological studies using Physiea MCR 300 rheometer and hydration profiling up to 24h via isothermal calorimetry.
