CHANGE OF EARLY HYDRATION PRODUCTS IN CEMENT PASTES CONTAINED HPMC
Cellulose ethers can retard cement hydration as well as thickening in SCC (self-consolidated concrete).Isothermal calorimetry, FT-IR spectra, and thermal analysis were performed in this frame to compare the heat evolution and the change process of major hydration products in neat cement pastes and cement pastes contained HPMC (hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose) at early ages. The results show that HPMC investigated significantly retards cement hydration during first hours, mostly by extending the induction period. The HPMC investigated also prolongs the formation of ettringite, C-S-H gel and CH (calcium hydroxide), and its ability of retardation is different for different hydration products, which is the strongest for CH and the weakest for ettringite.Absorption is thought as the major cause for the retardation.
