Use of Fodder Tree for Ruminant Animal Feeding and Landslide Protection

Fodder tree leaves have been use traditionally as green fodder during dry and winter months when green fodder are scarce. At mid hills of Nepal, fodder tree leaves used for feeding from November to May when most terrains are fallow and dry and not suitable for any cultivation due to moisture stress. In these dry months most of fodder trees are green due to their deep roots system and adaptation to adverse climatic condition. In this paper, we attempt to summarize beneficial uses of Ficus group of fodder trees for ruminant animal feeding and landslide protection.Ficus trees particularly Ficus semicordata, F.lacor,, F.roxburghi, and F.benjamina establish root systems which cover topsoil around the tree and strengthen unstable lands. Therefore farmers have been planting these type of trees around the farmland to protect it from landslide and provide green fodder during periods of fooder scarcity.
